Heat wave hits during crop growing time

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - South Georgia farmers are spending a lot to keep their crops alive during this heat wave. This July has also been one of the driest on record.

Many farmers are running irrigation systems every day, because now is a crucial growth time for many crops.

Rusty Harris, the Worth Co. Extension coordinator, said that they're in a heavy fruiting period and they're making the crop right now and need an 1 1/2 half to 2 inches of rain per week.

Farmers are already writing off some crops in fields that don't have irrigation systems.
