Communities host National Night Out events

The 27th annual National Night Out will take place for Aug. 3. Several events scheduled around the Coastal Empire.

More than 36 million people worldwide participated in last year's event, according to the NationalTownWatch.org.

National Night Out aims to raise awareness about crime and drug prevention; generate support for and participation in local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, according to the National Night Out's event website.
