SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah Fire and Emergency Services has doubled the hazmat teams from three to six.
The upgrade that started on Aug. 2 includes 10 more hazmat technicians, with at least three hazmat technicians on each apparatus at the six companies.
The expansion will provide more equitable service throughout the city, including the far western and southern portions of Savannah, while reducing the overall response time to Hazmat incidents, according to Savannah Fire and Emergency Services.
Hazmat teams will also be able to respond quicker to incidents an around the Georgia Ports Authority and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, as well as to the industrial areas on President St. Ext. and the Sweetwater and Bradley Point South areas on U.S. Highway 17 and GA 204, a news release said.
SFES said the move will not cost taxpayers any more money.
SFES hazmat teams are now housed at these fire stations:
Station 2 5 Skyline Dr.
Station 4 2401 Augusta Ave.
Station 6 3000 Liberty Parkway
Station 9 2235 Capital St.
