SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah will host the 115th National Convention of the Jewish War Veterans of the U.S.A., the organization announced Wednesday.
The convention is set for Aug. 8 to 15. JWV members will be at the Hilton Savannah DeSoto Hotel to participate in annual workshops and meetings.
The keynote speaker Wednesday's opening ceremony will be Jose Riojas, assistant secretary for pperations, security and preparedness of the Department of Veterans Affairs. He directs VA Emergency Management, Security and Law Enforcement Programs.
Other convention speakers include Brig. Gen. Lawrence Dudney, commanding general of the Combined Joint Task Force Phoenix IX, a Georgia Army National Guard-led task force comprised primarily of Soldiers from the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.; Maj. Gen. Baruch Levy, Chairman of TZEVET, the organization of veterans of the Israel Defense Forces; and JWV Member Capt. Isaac Greenberg, who will speak to our delegates about his two recent tours in Afghanistan, according to a news release.
Savannah's Mayor Otis S. Johnson and Gen. Pete Wheeler, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Veterans Services, will also be attending.
The organization's National Ladies' Auxiliary, which will be meeting concurrently with the JWV, will also be participating in several Savannah community projects. They will be giving teddy bears to the police to be used to comfort children in difficult situations, donating cell phones to be used to call 911 by women and men in abusive situations and donating pajamas to needy children throughout the community, the release said.
