Beaufort police officer receives top award

BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Beaufort Police Officer Othoniel Hatchett has been named South Carolina's School Resource Officer of the Year.

Over the years, Hatchett has served as the SRO at Beaufort High School and Lady's Island Middle School. While serving as the school resource officer, he came up with a number of programs to help the students.

He's now back on patrol and said he's proud of his time serving as a school resource officer.

"It means a big deal because as a patrolman working in the school, I'm able to establish a relationship not just with students and kids but parents, grandparents -- the whole family, the whole community," Hatchett said.

"He's got a fantastic work ethic," said Police Chief Matt Clancy. "He's energetic and he's always thinking of what can we do to make things a little better, how can we stream line things, he's always got a plan."

Hatchett has been with the Beaufort Police Dept. for seven years.
