SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The historic Carver State Bank was demolished on Thursday after being on the corner of Gwinett Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd for more than 80 years.
Many in the area say the demolition will lead to the rebirth of the Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. community. Just a few week ago, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the development of Carver Commons, a new retail space that will have a Food Lion supermarket and offices spaces.
The president of Carver State Bank watched with a sad smile. "That was very close to my office, the one I sat in for 35 years," said Bob James.
