Fire damages Savannah home

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - An early-morning fire damaged a house off Crosby Street.

The fire broke out at about 1:30 a.m. Friday. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the home. They had the blaze under control in about 20 minutes, but the house received significant damage and could be a total loss. No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.

"At first there wasn't that much flame because I went, not directly in front of the door, but peered in saw that the carpet, [and] the inside of the house, was burning on fire," said neighbor Winona Smith. "Then it got worse, the flame started coming out of the windows towards our house."

Firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading to nearby homes.  Investigators are still trying to figure out how the blaze started.
