SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a traffic fatality that happened Monday evening around 7 p.m. on Interstate 516.
The driver of a Dodge Dakota pickup was traveling westbound on I-516 when it collided with a GMC Sierra, according to police. The Dodge started to spin, struck the center median and went airborne. The vehicle landed on its roof, ejecting the passenger and trapping the driver.
The Jaws of Life were used to get to the trapped driver out. Both the driver and passenger were transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries.
I-516 is now back open after being shut down for several hours.
The names of the deceased are being withheld at this time until family is notified.
