2 killed in I-516 crash identified

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The names of two people who were killed in a collision on Interstate 516 on Monday night have been released.

The crash happened at about 7 p.m. Monday and shut down I-516 for several hours.

Mary Perkins, 68, was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup truck westbound on I-516 when it collided with a GMC Sierra, according to police. The Dodge started to spin, struck the center median and went airborne. The vehicle landed on its roof, ejecting 68-year-old John Clifton and trapping Perkins in the wreckage.

The Jaws of Life were used to get to Perkins out. They were both transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where they later died from their injuries.

An investigation continues into the crash.
