Business Group to Tour Alabama Plant

If you remember, in February WTOC traveled to Alabama to get a closer look at the effect a DaimlerChrysler plant had on one community there. Apparently, that trip caught the attention of a local group in Savannah. We got a lot of feedback from the stories we did, and it was so interesting to see how Daimler impacted a tiny community. But, some local residents in Savannah want to see the plant first hand.

When WTOC headed to Vance, Alabama, we took you inside the DaimlerChrysler owned Mercedes-Benz plant and showed you how it impacted the community. Since then, the DaimlerChrysler craze has continued in the Coastal Empire. While construction at the site in Pooler is well underway, a local group--the Savannah Business League--is headed to Alabama for a tour of their plant. The group, composed primarily of minority and small business owners, hopes to not only learn about the plant itself, but also about the changes business owners can expect when a plant of this magnitude comes to Chatham County.

"This is a very dynamic time for all citizens here in Chatham County," said Roy Jackson of the Savannah Business League. "This is a big economic boom if this plant comes, and we want to make sure that it's done right and make even more sure that all segments are involved in the coming of this plant."

The Savannah Business League isn't just touring the plant, members are also meeting with the officials from the BOE, the city's mayor, Alabama state Senator Charles Steele, and many more folks. So, it will most certainly be informative and educational. They pulled out of town this evening and they plan to return late tomorrow evening.
