SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Family and friends say 23-year-old Christopher Wright was killed fighting in Afghanistan. Wright was deployed in June.

But on Thursday, friends say his family got the devastating news that Christopher Wright was killed after an improvised explosive device hit his unit.

Wright is from Tollesboro, Kentucky. His two friends live in Savannah and told WTOC they learned the terrible news on Facebook.

"I saw that everybody had updated their status and said rest in peace Chris," Tabitha Tully said.

Tully says Wright died after Shrapnel hit him during an IED explosion.

Wright was stationed at Hunter Army Airfield and was from Tollesboro, Kentucky.

"Everybody knew him there. We all went to the same church and it is just devastating," Tully said.

Tully says this was Wright's second deployment and that he always had a passion for military service.

"You hear about soldier's dying overseas and it really doesn't dawn on you until someone close to you dies," Tully said.

Christopher Wright's Savannah friends plan to drive to Kentucky to attend his funeral.
