Georgia schools to get federal funds

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Georgia has been named one of 10 states granted a share of millions in federal funds to improve schools.

The U.S. Department of Education made the announcement of which states would be granted a portion of $3.4 billion in the second round of its "Race to the Top" competition.

Eighteen states and the District of Columbia were named finalists in July after missing out on the first round of federal grants.

South Carolina was also up for consideration but failed to make the cut.
