One of Savannah's first black officers dies

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah-Chatham Metro police officers are mourning the death of one of their own, one of the original nine black officers on the force.

Retired officer Alexander Grant, Jr. passed away on Sunday. He was one of the first black officers hired by the Savannah Police Department in 1947.

Visitation for Grant will be this Thursday at the Jones and Campbell Funeral Home on West Park Avenue from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The funeral is Friday at 11 a.m. at the Oakland Missionary Baptist Church on Buckhalter Road.
