Are your kids used to eating lunch at school? There's something to help them through the summer. The summer lunch program kicks off this week at parks and recreation centers all over Savannah. The program has been around for more than 30 years. This year, they expect to serve over 150,000 lunches. For some of the children, it's the most nutritious meal they will get all day.
"School is out and this is the food that's in when school is out," said summertime lunch coordinator Susan Morrison. "They need their milk, they need their protein. They are playing. We got a lot of swimming, a lot of games. Everything going on in the parks and the camps and they need to eat."
The summer lunch program runs from June 5 to July 30 at parks all over the city. It's all free. No registration is necessary the children just have to show up.
