YEMASEE, SC (WTOC) - For many elderly marines, the closed Yemasee Train Depot was their first memory of the Marine Corps. And those memories may soon be relivable again. The town council closed a deal this week to buy the depot from CSX Transportation.
Residents hope to renovate the depot that holds memories for many. An estimated half-million recruits from the eastern United States came to Hamlet of Yemasee by train in the first half of the 20th Century.
They would take buses to the Marine Corps depot at Parris Island, which is about 35 miles from the station.
The Yemasee station is the only Amtrak stop between Charleston and Savannah.
