SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The building and the name will remain the same, but the age of students attending Shuman will be changing.
The Savannah-Chatham School District celebrated the official change of Shuman Middle School to Shuman Elementary School. It's all part of the Passport to Excellence program, which identified the need for an elementary school on the eastside of Savannah.
Eventhough there was no need for a new building, there were some kinks to work out before the younger children could begin learning.
"Buildings are a long term investment, and what we were able to accomplish here was to retrofit. We had to put in some sinks, lowered the fountains, changed out furniture. We'll be ready," said Principal Diane Towles.
Also in attendance for the special event was Leiston Shuman Jr. The school was named after his father.
The school is holding an open house Thursday night. Parents are encouraged to attend.
