Westside Savannah rooming house destroyed by fire

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Savannah fire crews battled an early morning blaze on the city's westside.

Around 1:15 a.m., firefighters were called out to a rooming house on west 37th St., near MLK Blvd.

They arrived to find heavy smoke and flames shooting out of the front and top of the two story apartment home.

Crews spent an hour or so fighting the blaze, before they could get it completely knocked out.

The second floor was completely destroyed and the bottom floor received some damaged.

At least two people were living inside, but everyone made it out safely.

"We heard this explosion, or what seemed to be an explosion," explained witness Eli Irvin, pointing out the burned out building.  "Ran out of the bathroom and looked and the entire westside of the house was engulfed on the second floor."

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
