Recently, Afghan War Commander, Army Four-Star, David Petraeus, once belittled by lefties, now beloved, returned home to testify before the House Armed Services Committee.  Quite naturally, questions centered on  our war efforts, until Arizona Democrat, Gabrielle Giffords  shifted the priority from defeating the enemy to greening-up our combat zones.  She began by asserting that the U.S. Air Force is the (quote): "largest user of energy on the planet," and the Defense Department, overall, "the largest user of energy in the U.S.," with kudos, then, to the Air Force for apparently bringing Earth the coveted intergalactic petroleum-use crown.  She then pondered whether, following our Kandahar offensive, since energy upgrades there could include (quote): "small-scale solar and hydropower systems, and also some solar-powered street lights," might there also be plans to extend such technology to our other Afghan bases to "greatly reduce (the) need for fuel." Fuel, as in that demon-petroleum, with cleaner air in an active war zone, apparently her prime concern.

General Petraeus patiently explained that hydropower was not available in Afghanistan (hello!), but that adding more insulation to our structures had produced energy savings.  The take-away, then, from the Congresswomen's inquiry:  Perhaps an environmental impact study, and fat-free yogurt, should be required before any actual weaponry is brought to the fight. Hopefully, General Petraeus will reduce his focus on all that icky, freedom-preserving military stuff, and, for the sake of the Afghan people, get far more serious about "solar-powered street lights."  Now, is there anyone who still fails to see the importance of voting in November?
