POOLER, GA (WTOC) - It could be another week before Pooler's police chief comes home.

Chief Clarence "Butch" Chan, 65, died over the weekend while on a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea with his wife and other family members.

Pooler City Manager Robert Byrd said the cruise ship docked in Venice, Italy, on Monday night. Byrd said Italian protocol requires an autopsy and Byrd said officials likely won't release Chan's body until next Wednesday. Then Chan and his family will be able to fly home to the United States.

Pooler officials said Chan's death appears to have been from natural causes. Assistant Chief Mark Revenew said Tuesday that the official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Chan served as Pooler's police chief for 24 years.

Pooler officials are working with local attorney Steven Scheer and U.S. Rep.  John Barrow to try to expedite the process.
