ATLANTA (AP) - An 83-year-old man called the "Phantom of the Fox" who has long lived rent free at Atlanta's Fox Theatre will not immediately be thrown out.
The full board of the Atlanta Landmarks, Incorporated, made the offer to let Joe Patten stay until he needs around-the-clock care, but it's unclear if he will accept the deal. Since the late 1970's, Patten has lived rent free at the Fox Theatre.
But a recent stay in the hospital for diabetes resulted in him getting a letter asking to discuss his health concerns and his lifetime lease. Patten is credited with saving the theatre from the wrecking ball and saving it from fire in 1996. He lives in a hidden apartment in the theatre.
