SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is hosting a 5K run to benefit the restoration of the museum's B-17 bomber called the City of Savannah.
The B-17 honors one which left Hunter Army Air Field in Savannah and flew bombing missions over Germany in World War II. It is in the process of being restored to its wartime configuration. The bomber will remain on display in the Museum during the restoration process.
Activated in 1942 in Savannah, the Eighth Air Force was an important strike element in World War II and remains an active force today, according to the race website.
The running course will go through the campus of JCB Inc., and it will start and end at the museum. Registration ends at 11:59 p.m. Nov. 4.
