LADY'S ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - Teaching is a true passion and what each teacher brings to the classroom is unique. We found one teacher who uses her art degree to help students learn.
At Lady's Island Elementary School second grade teacher Teena Deer is starting a chapter on weather. She was asking students what they like and what they dislike about the weather.
Students then write the words and then draw pictures.
Bringing art into the classroom is nothing new for Mrs. Deer. She always tries to find someway to incorporate hands on activities, using her undergraduate art degree to teach students how to read and write.
"I like bringing that knowledge I had from that part of my life into teaching. I think when they can be creative it's much more rewarding for them and it cement that knowledge," said Deer.
Deer says teaching is her passion.
"I love it, I really do," said Deer.
"When they are learning things and the different answers they come up with and some of the things they say. They just really make me laugh sometimes. It's a lot of fun to listen to what their little minds are thinking," said Deer.
Teacher Deanna Holmes says Mrs. Deer inspires her.
"She's dedicated, hardworking. I got to work with her students and so her kids are a direct reflection of her teaching. They are well organized and enjoy learning," said Holmes.
