Target Coming to Savannah

The Savannah Mall is changing again, and the newest addition: Target. Construction is still going on for the new Bass Pro Outdoor World shop, which is taking the place of departed Parisian. That new store is expected to open this summer. Now Target has submitted plans to demolish the old Belk store and build in its place. The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce says construction crews are expected start work on the new Target by the fall.

For years, the closest Target for Coastal Empire residents has been in Bluffton, South Carolina. Target tried unsuccessfully to move to sites in Sandfly and on Eisenhower Drive. Now, the department strore may have finally found a home at the Savannah Mall.

"We're excited to see it happen," said Bill Hubbard, president of Savannah's chamber. "Target's a done deal."

Hubbard says Target chose an ideal spot.

"It will be an accessible site and the retailers in the mall will add to it also," he said.

The new Target will be 127,000 square feet. To give you an idea of how big that is, the Belk department store is actually 150,000 square feet; but because Belk is two stories and Target is only one, it will actually appear much larger. Because Target stores are typically one-story buildings, they'll tear down Belk and build a new store.

"The layout is different," said Hubbard. "That's why they'll demolish the store, to create a different footprint."

Neither Target nor the Savannah Mall would confirm the store's plans to build here; however, the company has submitted plans for the store with the City of Savannah and talked with the Chamber about its plans.
