SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The South Carolina Forestry Commission warns that conditions are favorable for wildfires during the holiday weekend.
The combination of humidity, dry conditions, and increased outdoor activity, the chance of fire in all counties statewide has increased as of Friday morning.
According to the Forestry Commission:
- Low humidity, no rain and dry ground makes for an increased chance of fire escaping.
- Holiday weekend means more outdoor recreation and debris burning
- Budget cuts means there are fewer firefighters and support staff and older dozers.
Those wishing to conduct an outdoor debris burn are urged to postpone it, if possible.
State law requires them to notify the Forestry Commission prior to conducting a debris burn and to take proper precautions for preventing the escape of the fire.
To report a wildfire, call 911 or 800.777.FIRE.
