Fire ravages rooming house, displaces residents

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – A rooming house at 42nd and Whitaker streets erupted in flames early Saturday morning, sending fleeing residents into the street, and spewing clouds of smoke into the night sky.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a structure fire at approximately 5:30 Saturday morning, according to Battalion One Chief Michael Metivier.

Trucks arrived to a building that had already suffered "a great deal of damage" as a result of the fire, and firefighters began evacuating residents.

The home's second story roof collapsed and the building suffered extensive fire and water damage, according to Metivier - Approximately 15 people were displaced, said Savannah Fire spokesman Mark Keller.

"The cause is underdetermined and under investigation," said Metivier. "The building is a total loss.
