Police: Fatal shooting may have been domestic dispute

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -  Savannah-Chatham Metro police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting of an Army staff sergeant.

Police said that Staff Sgt. Michael A. Sams, 36, recently returned from a tour of duty in Iraq may have been shot during a domestic dispute with his wife. Sams was in the 3rd Battalion, Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), which is based out the Hunter Army Airfield.

Sams was taken to Memorial University Medical Center with a gunshot wound before 8 a.m. Saturday and died at the hospital.

SCMPD Sgt. Robert Gavin said that Sams's wife, Melaya, was being interviewed Saturday afternoon but had not been charged.

Charges, if any, depend on the investigation outcome and consultation with the district  attorney's office, both of which are continuing, according to police.
