More than a thousand Low Country kids will be spending this week kicking, throwing, flipping and shooting as the annual Week of Champions gets underway. The Christian-themed sports camp puts professional athletes in teaching roles, showing kids how to play everything from soccer and football to tennis and cheerleading.
"We teach them the basic fundamentals of their particular sport," said program director Gary Wetherington. "We encourage them to stay healthy physically, mentally, and spiritually."
The guest speaker at tomorrow's banquet is University of Georgia head football coach Mark Richt. The Week of Champions started on Hilton Head 25 years ago, but has since spread out to include programs in Ridgeland and Beaufort.
