BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - For years, parking has been a hot topic in downtown Beaufort.
It continues to be a big issue even after the city of Beaufort put a new parking meter system in place in July. They now have new solar-powered parking kiosks to replace coin-operated meters, and the cost went up from 50 cents to $1 an hour. Parking tickets are now $10 instead of $3.
Since July they've addressed some complaints by adding more signage and putting the parking numbers on the sidewalk. Some shoppers like the new pay options, but others still aren't happy about the change.
"I thought it was much quicker being able to throw quarters in the machine and go through the whole process and sometimes there's a line," said Karen Hardesty of Beaufort, S.C.
Downtown merchants said that many of their customers are complaining about the new parking system saying there still isn't enough signage and that it's too complicated.
