Consumer Reports is a magazine known for its ratings of products and services and for its consumer investigations. Each week on The News Now, Consumer Reports showcases a unique mix of expert, independent product testing, survey research, investigative journalism and consumer advocacy. Dr. John Santa, M.D., M.P.H., is the director of Consumer Report's health ratings center.
Monday, Santa discussed heart surgeon ratings. There are more than 1,000 surgical groups in the U.S. that perform heart bypass surgery. About 90 percent of them provide performance data to The Society of Thoracic Surgeons, a nonprofit organization that represents heart surgeons and other doctors who operate on the chest.
