BEAUFORT, SC (WTOC) - Solicitor Duffie Stone has cleared two Beaufort Police Officers from the shooting of 24-year-old Anthony Bernard Bass. According to authorities, Bass started shooting at officers while they were investigating vandalism at Spanish Trace Apartments.

An officer approached Bass because he fit the description of a suspect, but when he ordered Bass to show his hands, investigators say Bass pulled out an automatic weapon and started shooting.

Both officers returned fire, hitting Bass six times.

While being cornered behind the air conditioning unit, authorities say Bass shot himself once in the head.

The pathologist is ruling Bass' death a suicide.
