SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A new water park is coming to Savannah, creating jobs and fun for families.

The developers of Pirate's Cove Water Park will break ground on Friday and they say they'll be open by next spring.

Seventeen acres of land at the end of West Gateway Boulevard is the future site of the water park. That's right along I-95 near GA Highway 204, behind Hooters and The Shell House restaurants.

Construction equipment is already in place and the park's general manager, Robert Welch, says he is confident this will be a big hit among local kids and tourists.

"We really feel this is the type of activity that the people in Savannah need," Welch said. "Based on that age group not having much to do."

The $12.5 million park will include rides and attractions geared toward three to 12-year-olds, speed slides for the older teens and a lazy river so kids and adults can cool off and relax.

Joe Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah, says this could be a great opportunity for the Savannah economy.

"I think it's terrific," said Marinelli. "There are so many hotels and restaurants out in that part of town and so helping those hotels and attract new customers.

And Marinelli says the close proximity to I-95 will grab a lot of attention. "I think it gives us the ability to intercept some people who may be driving south to Ft. Lauderdale or Miami or Daytona or Orlando, get them to say over in Savannah. And if they do that they will not only enjoy the water park but find their way into the historic district and other parts of town."

Not to mention the water park promises to bring 150 to 200 new jobs to the area.

Many hope Pirate's Cove Water Park will make a big splash when it opens in about 7 months.
