Volunteers can't use fire truck until county pays insurance

LEVY, SC (WTOC) - A fire truck volunteers in Levy, S.C., bought is causing controversy.

According to Fire Chief Doug Graham, the volunteers raised enough money and went and bought a truck for their Bellinger Hill fire station. Graham said they had Jasper County's permission, but then the county changed their minds and took away the insurance on the truck.

Graham is hoping the community will come together again and fight the county on the decision.

"It's too stupid," said Graham about the situation. "When you know you're playing with stupid people, I reckon, you get stupid answers. I guess that's what we got right now.  And they don't care about the people. If they cared about the people, they wouldn't be doing this."

Barbara Clark, who lives in Jasper County said, "We are sick and tired of being sick and tired. It's the same thing over and over, every time we turn around. Why can't they treat us like they treat Hardeeville, like they treat Ridgeland?  All I ask is we get a fair share."

The volunteers are hoping everyone will attend Monday's county council meeting at 7 p.m.

County Councilman Leroy Blackshear was contacted to discuss the issue. He said he'd explain the situation on Friday. Stay tuned for what the county has to say.
