JENKINS CO., GA (WTOC) - Hundreds of jobs are headed to a county with an almost 20 percent unemployment rate.
The Correction Corp. of America is planning to build a private prison in Jenkins County in Millen. The project will create up to 500 temporary jobs and up to 300 permanent jobs to run the facility. Local leaders say it will revive the town.
"We've been waiting for this for quite some time. We've been working on it for a number of years trying to get this to come about," said Mebel Jenkins of the Jenkins Co. Chamber of Commerce.
They'll start building in about three months and expect to start housing inmates 2012.
