Newspaper: Few convicted on weapons charges in SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A newspaper says a review of court records show that fewer than a third of people charged with illegally carrying or possessing a weapon in South Carolina are actually convicted.

The Greenville News reported Sunday that prosecutors blame the low conviction rate on a variety of factors.

Those include plea bargains, confusing gun laws and an unwillingness by juries to convict people on gun charges if they didn't commit another worse crime.

Victims advocates say getting tougher laws passed is hard because South Carolina lawmakers don't want to be seen as trying to limit the ability to buy guns.

State police chief Reggie Lloyd says even with plea bargains and handing some cases off to federal prosecutors, the conviction rate is too low.
