SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Every year this time, the Savannah Quarterback Club will name its picks for the top high school back and lineman of the week from the Savannah area.
Named linemen of the week, were Memorial Day School linebacker Zack Sauers and Bible Baptist center Josh Bridwell.
Against Westminster, Sauers posted 15 tackles, two interceptions, returning both for touchdowns.
"I'm glad to be honored by all these guys," Sauers said. "They picked me out of all these other good athletes that are in Savannah."
Bible Baptist center Josh Bridwell led the way for the Braves, helping his team amass 485 rushing yards against Charleston Collegiate.
"My whole team came together and played a very great game," he said. "I couldn't have done any of this without any of them."
Named backs of the week were Groves' running back Elijah Turner and Country Day quarterback Tate O'Connor.
Turner rushed for 175 yards on 17 carries against Country Day, also scoring a key touchdown with the Rebels trailing by two scores. Despite the numbers, for Turner, the honor came as a surprise.
"I was home Sunday just relaxing after the game and that's when I got the email from my head coach," Turner said. "It felt real good."
No stranger to the club, Country Day quarterback Tate O'Connor received the nod for his performance against Wheeler County. O'Connor finishes 21-30, with 312 yards, and three touchdowns.
"It's an incredible honor to be honored by this club, and by these men," he said. "It's a joy every time."
