SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Third Infantry Division soldiers are getting ready to wrap up their current mission in Iraq. Roughly 50,000 troops are in Iraq providing support and counter-terrorism training.
According to Maj. Mike Sullican, who spoke to WTOC by satelite, 3rd ID soldiers began training for Operation New Dawn prior to their deployment in Iraq.
"So when you go out and talk to the soldiers you can tell they have a high morale. They are excited about the mission they are doing, they believe in that mission, and I think the best part is they are seeing the results," said Maj. Sullivan. "We are seeing an Iraqi security force that is more competent and more capable than it was before we got here and I believe we are ready to hand off this mission to our replacements and they can continue on as New Dawn continues."
The entire 3rd ID is expected to be home by July of next year.
