Former Beaufort Co. clerk found guilty

BEAUFORT CO., SC (WTOC) - A former Beaufort County clerk of court was found guilty Tuesday afternoon on all charges.

Elizabeth Smith was convicted of embezzlement and misconduct in office. Smith was charged with embezzling more than $23,000 from two public accounts in the clerk's office to pay for life insurance for some of her relatives and a vacation home on Pawley's Island.

After opening arguments Tuesday morning, the state called several witnesses and experts who testified she wrote the checks out of the accounts.

The jury deliberated for just 30 minutes.

Smith was sentenced to five years probation and 200 hours of community service.
