METTER, GA (WTOC) - Hi-tech tools have become fairly common in classrooms, but some educators make the most of those fancy gizmos by using them in an enthusiastic mix with time-honored teaching techniques.

By walking into Ashlee Lott's first grade classroom at Metter Elementary School you know right away students are learning how to read.

"They come to us knowing sounds and letters and we teach them to put it together and make words; so it's pretty tough for a lot of them," said Lott.

Mrs. Lott, a Georgia Southern graduate, comes up with creative ways to use the promethean board to engage her students.

And it works.

"The kids love it. Something you would normally do on a piece of paper and put it on the board. They are memorized all of a sudden. It's very important and they learn how to use it. in fact most of them by Christmas will now how to us it by themselves," said Lott.

Her creativity and boundless energy, especially for a second year teacher, have greatly impressed Metter Elementary Principal Lesa Brown.

"From the minute the students walk in the door until the minute they leave in the afternoon, they are engaged in sort of activity," said Brown.

"They always have a lot of energy and so you have to come to work with energy," said Lott.

But the fuel behind that shared energy is genuine caring.

"I've just always loved children,"said Lott.

So when someone says it's better in Metter. Well, if you walk in Mrs. Lott's classroom you'll know it's true.
