SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - The Georgia Department of Labor reported Thursday that the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Savannah dropped six-tenths of a percentage point to 9.1 percent in August from 9.7 percent in July.
The number of unemployed workers in the Savannah area is down 1,307 workers to 15,988, from 17,295.
Layoffs in retail trade and construction resulted in an increase in the Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate to 10 percent in August up one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised 9.9 percent in July, according to the labor dept. That is unchanged from the 10 percent rate in August 2009. Savannah's jobless rate in August 2009 was 8.5 percent.
The number of payroll jobs in Savannah was unchanged at 151,100 from July to August.
In August, 2,326 laid-off workers in metro Savannah filed initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits, that's down 960, or 29.2 percent, from 3,286 in July.
Statewide, 70,264 laid-off workers filed initial claims for unemployment insurance (UI) benefits in August, an increase of 12, or 0.9 percent, from 1,273 in July.
