ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA (WTOC) - The search will resume Monday morning for a 14-year-old girl who went missing on the east beach of St. Simons Island.

The Department of Natural Resources was still searching for the teen on Sunday night.

The girl was last seen Saturday, near East Beach, wearing a white shirt. She was swimming approximately 100 yards offshore.

"They were a family that was visiting and they were walking down the beach in and out of the water and a wave hit the little girl and took her under," Jay Wiggins with Glenn County Emergency Management said.

Dozens of volunteers helped with the search on Sunday.

"We're looking for any articles of clothing. We're searching the rocks, the water. We are just looking for anything we can find," volunteer Angela Park said.

Emergency crews say this is now a recovery operation, not a rescue situation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coast Guard Sector Charleston operations center at 843.740.7050.
