Delta plane overshoots runway

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A Delta Airlines Flight 339 overshot the runway landing area during a heavy downpour of rain while landing early Monday afternoon in Savannah, Ga.

Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport officials say the plane did not run off the actual concrete safety area and did not get stuck in mud. They say crews were able to immediately tow it to the gate and let passengers deplane. There were no injuries, according to the Chatham Co. Emergency Management Agency.

"They were in the plane as it was towed to the terminal. They did not have to deplane -- they did not have to be transported. They were brought back to the terminal and able to use the jetways as normal," said Lori Lynah, spokeswoman for the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport.

Lynah said the plane did not skid off the runway. The FAA is investigating, but officials said heavy rain played a significant role in this.
