SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - City officials kicked off the "Volunteer Savannah" program at the West Broad Street YMCA. Workers donated their time and efforts to create a new pathway with brand new trees and shrubs.
The landscaping project is just one of many planned by the mayor and city council that fits within the categories of neighborhood, education, culture and health.
"Main goal is to get people out, help volunteer to keep Savannah beautiful and give them a sense of purpose and pride in their neighborhoods. And to encourage children to read and be successful in life," said Chief Service Officer Connie Cooper.
The volunteer program was developed when Savannah was chosen as one of ten cities to receive a $200,000 grant from the Rockefeller foundation.
