CLAXTON, GA (WTOC) - A Claxton police officer has been transported to Memorial University Medical Center after being shot in his home.

Claxton police said officer William Valentine was shot on Sunday morning.

His daughter, Tanika Valentine, 20, was arrested for aggravated assault a short time later.

Police say they are still investigating whether she shot her father.

Karin Valentine, the officer's wife and the Tanika's mother, said it was a terrible accident.

Valentine told WTOC she was worried her daughter was going to get the gun and hurt herself.

"I told my husband that she was going in the room so he ran in there and grabbed his gun belt and when he grabbed his gun belt he turned and bumped into the dresser and that's when the gun went off," Karin Valentine said.

Valentine said her daughter has been stressed lately.

"She was really upset and the next thing I know she said you all don't want me here, let me see what I can do about that," Valentine said.

Claxton Police Chief Edward Oglesbee said Tanika Valentine has a history of domestic problems.

Neighbors said the family seemed quiet. "They are a happy family and every family has their ups and downs but I believe today it just went too far," Kimberly Lanier said.

Karin Valentine insists her daughter didn't hurt anyone. "She never even had the gun in her hand. My husband went and got the gun. We were afraid she was going to do something crazy to herself," she said.

Valentine is in stable condition.
