Members of the 512th and 205th Quartermaster Companies returned to Hunter Army Airfield from their work with Operation Iraqi Freedom late last night. They were supposed to arrive on Tuesday, then were delayed three times yesterday. The plane finally landed about 10pm. Hundreds of family members and friends gathered to give the soldiers an emotional welcome home.
The company was deployed to the Middle East in January. The homecoming left many soldiers practically speechless.
"Words can't describe what this is like," one soldier said. "I'm just so happy to be with my family."
The 512th and 205th Companies were in charge of supplying clean drinking water to the Army, Marines, coalition forces and even enemy POWs. The group is part of one of the only battalions in the US trained to provide this vital service to our servicemen and women.
