This past Wednesday, the nation presented yet another posthumous Medal of Honor "for conspicuous gallantry, at the risk of his life, above and beyond the call of duty" during combat operations in Afghanistan.
Army Staff Sergeant Robert J. Miller, the weapons sergeant in a Special Forces Alpha-Team, was out with a reconnaissance patrol, composed of seven fellow Green Berets and 15 Afghan Army soldiers, when they were ambushed by a large enemy force, occupying elevated positions. With no cover, the patrol immediately came under RPG and automatic weapon fire. Walking point, and with no concern for his personal safety, Staff Sergeant Miller ordered the others to fall back and seek cover, while he then charged the enemy over totally exposed ground , drawing fire from the over one-hundred insurgents attacking his group. Shot in the upper body, he ignored the wound, and continued to maneuver forward, insuring that his 22 joint-force teammates could withdraw to cover, ultimately saving the lives of all. Sergeant Miller, by then, shot twice, was ultimately mortally wounded, felled with rifle in hand, his ammunition and grenades expended, having battled for an astonishing 25-minutes against an overwhelming foe.
Staff Sergeant Robert Miller showed incredible courage, valor and selflessness to save his team, at the cost of his life. Yet another truly great American who gave his all, and last measure, for his buddies, his country and our freedom, no finer example can there be, of service, sacrifice and honor. All of which, this proud and thankful nation must never be allowed to forget.
