BRUNSWICK, GA (WTOC) - A mussel found in the Altamaha River Basin is being proposed for protection as an endangered species.
U.S Fish and Wildlife Service Biologist Jimmy Rickard says the spinymussel may be headed towards extinction. He also reported that less than 60 live spinymussels have been counted since 1997. The cause of the population decline is unknown.
Georgia Department of Natural Resources Aquatic Zoologist Jason Wisniewski says they are concerned with the health of the mussel's host fish, which researches have not yet identified.
