Hinesville among towns to get federal refund

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – The federal government is giving millions of dollars to several area communities. It all stems from the Army's change of plans.

In 2006, the Army said it was moving the 5th Brigade to Fort Stewart -- prompting Hinesville, Richmond Hill and Liberty County to spend millions of dollars getting ready for an influx of new families. The communities launched projects such as building roads and a water reclamation facility.

But the Army changed its mind and decided not to bring in the 5th Brigade to Fort Stewart.

Hinesville is getting more than $24 million back. Richmond Hill is getting nearly $3 million. Liberty County expects to get back more than $3.5 million.
