BLUFFTON, SC (WTOC) - Dr. Babet Villena-Alvarez, the chair of University of South Carolina Beaufort's Humanities and Fine Arts Department, has been selected as the 2010 South Carolina Professor of the Year.
She was one of 37 faculty members from around the state nominated in the contest sponsored by the governor and the state's commission on higher education.
"When I went there and chatted with the panel, we were exchanging stories and we were laughing, and I said, 'okay I'm sure there's some scientist professor out there who's very much deserving of this award.' So when they selected me, when I found out about this, I am just surprised," Dr. Villena-Alvrez told WTOC.
'She's been a wonderful professor in the classroom, a great advocate for her students outside the classroom and she has been a role model and leader for all of our faculty," said Dr. Janet T. Upshaw, chancellor of University of South Carolina Beaufort.
Dr. Alvarez, who also teaches French and Spanish, was USCB's Professor of the Year in 1998.
