GARDEN CITY, GA (WTOC) - There are many tractor trailer in Garden City near the ports. And now, fewer are winding up in wrecks. The Garden City Police Commercial Vehicle Traffic Unit was created a year ago with just two officers. Now they are up to four.
And thanks to their hard work, Garden City has won the Governor's Office Highway Challenge.
The unit not only looks at how the tractor trailors are driven, but the condition of the equipment as well.
"The concept arose around 2007. As everyone knows the port growth has grown tremendously and were starting to see double digit increases and we were starting to see more accidents," explained Garden City police officer Capt. Gil Ballard. "We were starting to see violations in which when we pulled a truck over and we could see that things just didn't look right, but we didn't have the authority of knowledge and training to do something."
Now they have that training.
In 2008 there were 212 crashes involving large trucks and they were down to 127 in 2009.
