SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - A high school student from middle Georgia is making a positive impact on soldiers coming home to the Coastal Empire.
Evan Place, a senior from Macon, brought boxes and bags full of toiletries and other goodies for soldiers coming home from deployments. Operation Welcome Home is geared toward the single soldier who is coming back to post to an empty and all too often unstocked home.
The teenager asked his mom's elementary school class to pitch in and they did, even writing notes to the men and women they've never met.
"I really wanted the soldiers to know that there were still people out there that were trying to help them. We haven't forgot about them," Place told WTOC.
"Evan's always had a big heart and this actually started many years ago when he had a teammate, a swim team member, who was deployed to Baghdad," said his mother, Lisa Place.
Place received a plaque for all his hard work and a Hunter Army Airfield Garrison coin.
